This review was very, very hard to write when I had track number 7 on repeat from Miley Cyrus’ new album Bangerz: Money ain’t nothing but money/ When you get to the money, it ain’t nothing but money.
**Yes, I AM giving away a copy of the deluxe edition of Bangerz – details are in the last paragraph**
If you know anything about me, you know I am – and always will be – a die-hard Disney Channel fan so naturally I am an immensely huge fan of Ms Cyrus. Actually, one of my first really big events I covered when starting out as a teen reporter happened to be a Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana Tribute concert.
Back to the album. Please note, this is a teeny, tiny bit long. Miley discribes this album’s sound as ‘dirty south hip-hop’ – hey, we all love a bit of a Southern accent channeling some Lil Kim. I mean, I DO love Taylor Swift AND Nicki Minaj… A lot.
1. A unique accent which comes through her music and
2. Has one of the most phenomenal singing voices in the music industry today.
People used to deny this during her Disney days, but I see the same people now complimenting her on hitting those high notes in Wrecking Ball. Why do these artists have to be judged because of Disney? Have we forgotten Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Xtina came from the exact same clubhouse – I resisted the urge to add any famous mouse relation there.
Sorry, I just went on a rant.
Really, back to the album. Three words: I. Love. It. Normally with an album – no matter how much I love the artist – I find myself skipping a track or two because, well, I am just not feeling it. With that said, there are tracks that I love more and others I love less on Bangerz but for the most part…. THIS ALBUM IS GENIUS wrapped up in a tad bit crazy. Executive producer, Mike Will Made It (love the name) is to thank for this. You can instantly hear his influence in everything and after having worked with the likes of Rihanna and Juicy J, why not trust him to do everything, right?
Can I just start by saying that track 3, SMS (Bangerz) featuring Britney Spears was actually a song that Nicki Minaj was meant to feature on…. But you know, I love Brits too so she IS the next best option. I love all the hip-hop elements in this album and Miley’s bursts of rap verses (again, track number 7 is on re-re-repeat!). Of course, track 6, Wrecking Ball continues to be in my top favourites of the album because Miley’s voice really resonates so beautifully. If you are not such a fan of Miley as I am, I suggest giving this album a good third, fourth or even sixth listen. I listened to it three times at work and twice on the bus. What I enjoy about her music is that it really, and truly, reflects her personality – if you ever were doubtful, take a look back at Miley just before her ending her stint as Hannah Montana.
To end, Bangerz is worthy of receiving iconic status and after being certified Gold in its third week out, why not. This album is one of Miley’s best offerings yet and I am already counting down until her next album. I am expereincing serious FOMO over her world tour not coming to SA but I am still keeping my hopes up. Now the question is, what will her next single be? I am praying that it is track number 7 but most of my money is on 3.
Now, do you want to win a copy of the deluxe edition of Bangerz? PLUS two limited edition bracelets, just tweet or comment and tell me what dance movie Miley is known to do…. Easy, right? Good luck! A winner will be announced over the weekend. :)
