I get asked a lot of questions related to what I do and about some of the niche interests I have which sometimes come as a surprise, here are my answers for you to take a look at. If you’d like a more detailed answer or would just like to chat, make sure to get in touch with me.
How old are you?
I was born on 9 May 1993 (on Mother’s Day!) and that makes me 23 years old.
Where do you live?
I’m from Durban, South Africa but moved to Johannesburg in September 2013.
When did you start blogging?
If we want to get technical, I started blogging when I was 13 years old but it was for fun and to test out my ability to code and design as well as talk about my love for Anime and Manga. Mish Informed was started sometime in 2011 as a way to focus more on my writing.
What camera do you use to take photos?
I don’t use anything too fancy. I either use my Panasonic Lumix GF1 or Samsung Galaxy s4.
Some of your blog titles are very random – why is that?
My friend says my post titles are sometimes weird, so I thought I’d explain why. Sometimes the titles are straightforward but most times they are song lyrics. I stumble upon songs where the lyrics ‘speak’ to me and normally feel they’d be perfect as blog titles.
Why are comments on some posts disabled?
I disable comments on press releases because I place them up if they’re relevant to me and if I plan to attend an event or write about the specific topic. It’s a way to inform everyone and a bit of a heads up of what to expect in future posts on the blog. Other times it’s due to a sensitive topic which I’d rather not promote an unhealthy debate around – it’s happened before, so I’d like to prevent it in the future.
How did you get into celebrity reporting and entertainment writing?
Well, I’m not limited to those two categories as I’ve done opinion pieces and angle pieces on a number of topics, but I got into writing in about the 11th grade during a school project. In the project we had to talk about what career we’d like to get in to and I decided to choose Journalism, I got in touch with a few journalists, loved the process of interviewing each of the journos and realised that telling the story behind a person is what I’d love to do. Ever since then I focused on that aspect and it’s been years later and I’m still doing it!
Do you get nervous before interviewing someone?
All of the time. I’m a very shy person, which some people can never believe, but I hide my nerves and compose myself because I know I need to get a good interview. Normally once the interview has started my nerves tend to die down a bit and I’m able to feel a lot better.
Can you name a few people you enjoyed interviewing?
This is always tough because each person is great to talk to but if I had to choose I loved interviewing Debora Patta, Jeannie D and Cody Simpson. Oh, and let us not forget Gregg Sulkin (Wizards of Waverly Place; Pretty Little Liars) who said he loves my accent and wants to marry a South African. I also interviewed him on my Birthday!
Do you ever ask for autographs?
The only person I’ve ever asked for an autograph is from Debora Patta, otherwise I just ask for a picture but sometimes I don’t even get around to doing that!
You don’t seem like a person who likes anime and manga, do you really?
Yes, I do! I absolutely love anime and manga. I’ve been absorbed with Japanese culture ever since I can remember. I really got into it at around the age of 13 when I started high school and found other people who liked it too and we’d have anime marathons together and generally geek out about everything! It turns out that I don’t look like a person who likes a lot of certain things that I actually do.
What is your favourite anime?
I have so many but my special favourites include: Sailor Moon; Shugo Chara; Death Note; Tokyo Mew Mew; Pokemon; Digimon; Love Live! School Idol Project (NozoEli for life!); Say ‘I Love You’; Ao Haru Ride; Genshiken; Shakugan no Shana; Ouran High School Host Club; No Game No Life; White Album 2; Nana; Love Hina; Negima and every Studio Ghibli movie.
What is your favourite manga?
Again, so many but my favourites list is shorter compared to anime: Mars; Fushigi Yugi; Princess Ai; Gakuen Alice; Strobe Edge; Tokyo Mew Mew and Negima.
What music do you listen to?
You can get an idea by taking a look at these posts.
Why do you love Disney so much?
What isn’t there to love! It’s a great source of magic and happiness! I used to dream of working for Disney when I was younger. I find the work that they do to be absolutely wonderful and beautiful! See all my Disney-related content here.
Which Disney movies are your favourites?
Wow, so many! Some personal favourites are: Frozen; Big Hero 6; The Little Mermaid; 101 Dalmatians; Tangled; Aladdin; Cinderella; Sleeping Beauty; Peter Pan; Beauty and the Beast and The Princess and the Frog. I actually blogged about my five favourite Disney films, take a look here.
How do you draw so well?
Let’s be honest, I’m not all that good but I appreciate all the compliments I get on my artwork! I’m self-taught and practice a lot – or in my case, as often as I can. I used to gift illustrated caricatures to my local and international interviewees quite often – and still do – which really contributed in improving my skills over time. Practice makes perfect after all! Just always keep at it and you’ll see improvement!
